    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Laser Technology
    • Ultrafast Science

    Background:

    • Chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) systems are crucial for generating high-intensity ultrashort laser pulses.
    • Existing pulse stretching techniques can be complex, sensitive to alignment, and bulky.
    • There is a need for compact, robust, and easily aligned pulse stretchers for CPA.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To present a novel compact pulse stretcher utilizing curved diffraction gratings.
    • To demonstrate its compatibility with standard grating-pair compressors in CPA systems.
    • To analyze its performance, including positive group-delay dispersion and third-order dispersion.

    Main Methods:

    • Design and analysis of a pulse stretcher based on curved diffraction gratings.
    • Investigation of frequency-dependent delay and dispersion characteristics.
    • System parameter analysis for optimal stretcher-compressor matching.
    • Development of design specifications for a 40-fs pulse at 800 nm.

    Main Results:

    • The proposed stretcher introduces positive group-delay dispersion.
    • It is highly insensitive to alignment errors due to its design with no degrees of freedom.
    • The system is compact, robust, and utilizes standard optical components.
    • Design specifications for a 40-fs pulse stretcher-compressor system are provided.

    Conclusions:

    • The curved diffraction grating pulse stretcher offers a practical and advantageous solution for CPA systems.
    • Its compact, robust, and alignment-insensitive design simplifies implementation.
    • This stretcher is suitable for generating ultrashort laser pulses with precise dispersion control.
