Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...

Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Oxygen Therapy for Respiratory Failure

Oxygen therapy has emerged as a significant tool in enhancing the quality of life for patients suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). While this therapy has principally been studied on patients with significant hypoxemia, this therapeutic approach helps prevent potential organ damage and can be administered in the comfort of one's home.
Oxygen therapy is vital in increasing and maintaining blood oxygen levels in PAH patients. As a result, it aids in reducing fatigue, improving...

Peripheral Artery Disease III: Interprofessional Care

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is characterized by narrowed arteries that diminish blood flow to the extremities. Effective management of PAD requires an interprofessional approach involving various healthcare professionals. The critical aspects of interprofessional care for PAD patients focus on risk factor modification, drug therapy, exercise therapy, nutrition therapy, critical limb ischemia care, and interventional radiology and surgical procedures. The primary treatment goal for PAD...
Hand hygiene01:23

Hand hygiene

Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Surgical asepsis, or the sterile technique, refers to practices that render and keep objects and areas free of microorganisms.
Hand washing...
Diabetic Foot Ulcer01:31

Diabetic Foot Ulcer

Definition A diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a chronic, non-healing wound that develops in individuals with diabetes. It typically occurs on pressure-bearing areas such as the heel, metatarsal heads, or hallux, and carries a high risk of infection and amputation.Pathophysiology • The development of DFUs can be explained by four interconnected mechanisms: neuropathy, ischemia, infection, and impaired wound healing. • Neuropathy is the most common factor. Sensory neuropathy reduces pain perception,...

Peripheral Artery Disease IV: Nursing Management

The nursing management of a patient with peripheral artery disease (PAD) begins with a thorough assessment of the patient’s health history and clinical manifestations.AssessmentHealth History: Evaluate the patient’s history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, family history of cardiovascular issues, and lifestyle factors such as dietary patterns, smoking, and physical activity.Physical Examination:Assess the affected extremity for decreased or absent peripheral pulses, temperature changes,...

Summary

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) treatment may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy. Case studies show HBO therapy effectively heals PG ulcers and reduces associated pain, suggesting its potential as an adjunctive treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunology
  • Oxygen Therapy

Background:

  • Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis.
  • PG is widely accepted as an immunologic-based phenomenon.
  • Current treatments include corticosteroids, antibiotics, and immunotherapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the application of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in patients with PG.
  • To assess the efficacy of HBO therapy for PG ulcers and pain.

Main Methods:

  • Literature search of MEDLINE and National Baromedical Service collections.
  • Review of case studies on HBO therapy for Pyoderma gangrenosum.

Main Results:

  • HBO therapy demonstrated effectiveness in treating PG ulcers.
  • HBO therapy was shown to reduce pain associated with PG in case studies.

Conclusions:

  • HBO therapy shows promise as an effective treatment for Pyoderma gangrenosum.
  • Further research is warranted to establish HBO therapy's role as an adjuvant treatment for PG.
