Serum leptin levels are significantly higher in men with premature ejaculation (PE). This finding suggests leptin may be a potential biomarker for diagnosing this common male sexual disorder.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Sexual Medicine
  • Urology

Background:

  • Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most prevalent male sexual dysfunction.
  • Currently, no definitive diagnostic test exists for PE.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the diagnostic utility of serum leptin levels for premature ejaculation.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study compared serum leptin levels in 46 PE patients and 44 controls.
  • PE diagnosis followed DSM-IV criteria and a <1-minute intravaginal ejaculatory latency time.

Main Results:

  • PE patients exhibited significantly higher serum leptin levels (8.3±3 ng/mL) compared to controls (3.3±1 ng/mL) (P<0.001).
  • At a cutoff of 6.3 ng/mL, serum leptin demonstrated 80.4% sensitivity and 97.7% specificity for PE prediction.

Conclusions:

  • Serum leptin levels are elevated in individuals with premature ejaculation.
  • Further research is warranted to establish serum leptin as a reliable diagnostic marker for PE.
