Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders01:24

Treatment Strategies for Psychological Disorders

Treatment approaches for psychological disorders fall into three main categories: psychological, biological, and sociocultural. Each approach targets different aspects of mental health, requiring varying levels of education and training.
Psychological therapies focus on modifying emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through talking, interpreting, listening, rewarding, challenging, and modeling. Clinical psychologists, counselors, and social workers commonly practice psychotherapy. Clinical...
Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in situations...

Antidepressant Drugs: MAOIs and Other Agents

Atypical antidepressants, including bupropion (Wellbutrin), mirtazapine (Remeron), nefazodone (Serzone), trazodone (Desyrel), and vilazodone (Viibryd), offer unique mechanisms of action. Bupropion weakly inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake, aiding depression treatment and smoking cessation, with a low risk of sexual dysfunction. Mirtazapine enhances serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmission, leading to sedation, increased appetite, and weight gain. As a result, it helps treat...

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Obesity is a significant global health issue.
  • Individuals with schizophrenia exhibit higher rates of obesity.
  • Managing weight in this population presents unique challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of a combined behavioral intervention, nutritional information, and physical exercise program.
  • To assess the effects on body mass index (BMI) and weight.
  • To evaluate the long-term maintenance of weight loss in patients with schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 59 inpatients diagnosed with persistent schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders and a BMI > 25.
  • Participants were divided into an intervention group (n=28) and a control group (n=31).
  • Intervention included behavioral strategies, nutritional guidance, and physical activity over 3 months, with 1-year follow-up.

Main Results:

  • The intervention group demonstrated statistically significant reductions in BMI and weight after 3 months.
  • These reductions in BMI and weight were successfully maintained at the 1-year follow-up.
  • Statistical significance was noted at p = .017 for BMI and p = .006 for weight.

Conclusions:

  • People with persistent schizophrenia can achieve significant weight loss and BMI reduction.
  • Providing adequate information and a structured support framework is crucial for success.
  • The observed weight loss and BMI improvements are sustainable long-term.
