Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation01:13

Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation

Insufficient sleep refers to not getting the recommended amount of sleep for optimal functioning, even if it's just slightly less than needed. Sleep insufficiency may occur due to lifestyle choices, such as staying up late for social events or work, resulting in routinely getting less sleep than required. For example, consistently sleeping 6 hours when the body needs 7-9 hours can lead to cumulative effects on health and well-being.
Sleep deprivation is a more severe form of sleep loss...

Summary

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale for Colombia (ESS-VC) is a reliable and valid tool for assessing sleepiness in the Colombian adult population. This validated scale accurately identifies patients with severe sleepiness and correlates well with polysomnography results.

Area of Science:

  • Sleep Medicine
  • Psychometrics
  • Clinical Validation

Background:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness is a common complaint impacting quality of life.
  • Validated tools are essential for accurate diagnosis and management of sleep disorders.
  • The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is a widely used measure, but requires validation for specific populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the Epworth Sleepiness Scale for use in Colombia (ESS-VC).
  • To assess the reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change of the ESS-VC in a Colombian adult population.
  • To compare the ESS-VC with polysomnography findings.

Main Methods:

  • The study involved translation and retro-translation of the ESS, followed by an eight-phase validation process.
  • Phases included pilot testing, expert review, internal consistency analysis (n=120), and concurrent/discriminating criteria validation (n=150) against polysomnography.
  • Reproducibility (n=15) and sensitivity to change (n=100) were also evaluated.

Main Results:

  • The ESS-VC demonstrated suitable internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha=0.85).
  • The scale effectively identified patients with severe sleepiness (K Wallis Chi2=19.81, p=0.003).
  • Significant correlations were found with sleep apnoea severity, abnormal sleep latency, and REM sleep latency, indicating clinical validity.

Conclusions:

  • The ESS-VC is a reliable, valid, and sensitive tool for assessing sleepiness in urban Colombian adults.
  • The scale is well-adapted to the local context and shows significant clinical and statistical correlation with polysomnography.
  • ESS-VC provides a valuable instrument for sleep disorder assessment in Colombia.
