Background:

  • Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a debilitating complication of herpes zoster (shingles).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of corticosteroid treatment in preventing the development of postherpetic neuralgia.
  • To assess the safety profile of corticosteroids when used for PHN prevention.

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials.
  • Searched multiple databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, CENTRAL) up to September 2006.
  • Included trials comparing corticosteroids (oral, IM, IV) with placebo or no treatment in herpes zoster patients within seven days of rash onset.
