Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the accuracy of a deterministic record linkage algorithm with two public domain software applications: The Link King and Link Plus.
  • To assess the sensitivity and positive predictive values (PPVs) of these algorithms in unduplicating a large client database.

Main Methods:

  • A deterministic algorithm, The Link King, and Link Plus were applied to an administrative database of over 500,000 clients.
  • A random sample of linked records underwent blinded clerical review by four research staff.
  • Sensitivity and PPVs were calculated using reviewer decisions as the gold standard.

  • The Link King and Link Plus achieved optimal sensitivity and PPVs in the mid-90s.
  • The basic deterministic algorithm yielded a sensitivity of 79% and PPVs of 98%.

  • Link Plus is a viable alternative for non-SAS users, provided programming resources are available.
