Abstract:
Helicobacter pylori is the best documented of a new group of bacteria recently discovered to colonize the mucosa of humans and other animals. The acquisition of a cag pathogenicity island was an important stage in its role as a pathogen. Of the many diagnostic methods available, the respiratory test is the most reliable. Serology must also be considered in the diagnostic armamentarium because patients frequently use proton pump inhibitors. Macrolide susceptibility testing by culture or molecular methods is now necessary before prescribing clarithromycin, because of the high prevalence of this resistance.
