Context:

Falls are a frequent issue in geriatric hospital treatment and patient safety discussions.
This study investigated the relationship between falls and patient mobility outcomes in a geriatric hospital setting.

Purpose:

To determine if falls in geriatric patients are associated with lower mobility at discharge, measured by the Barthel Index.
To assess the suitability of fall rates as a quality indicator in geriatric care.

Summary:

A comparison between 811 fallers and 5229 non-fallers revealed no linear relationship between fall rates and Barthel Index scores at discharge.
Fall rates were lowest in the highest (80-100) and lowest (0-20) mobility groups.
While 44% of falls caused injury or pain, a higher fall rate correlated with better outcomes in specific mobility-related Barthel Index items (transfer, walk/wheelchair).

Impact:

The findings suggest that fall rates alone may not be a suitable quality indicator for geriatric care without risk adjustment.
Highlights the complexity of falls in older adults and the need for nuanced quality metrics.
