Background:

Effective emergency response relies on clinician engagement during crises.
Little is known about clinician awareness of hospital emergency plans and notification procedures, especially for off-site staff.
Limited clinician knowledge can severely hinder hospital emergency plan effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess hospital emergency plans, clinician notification methods, and recall procedures.
To evaluate clinicians' understanding of emergency notification and recall protocols at their affiliated hospitals.

Main Methods:

Written surveys distributed to hospital emergency coordinators, chiefs of service, and clinicians.
Study conducted within a large, urban, multihospital healthcare system.

Main Results:

64% of surveyed hospitals had a recall protocol; 53% of these required direct hospital contact with clinicians.
17% of hospitals with recall protocols utilized a central operator for clinician notification.
56% of chiefs of service reported high familiarity with their facility's emergency plan; 53% were aware of its activation in the past year.

Conclusions:

Hospital emergency responders demonstrate insufficient knowledge of institutional emergency plans.
Hospitals need to develop, teach, and drill tiered activation systems for effective physician call-up.
Enhanced clinician familiarity with emergency plans is essential for ensuring adequate surge capacity and timely response.
