Tonsillitis II: Management01:26

Tonsillitis II: Management

This lesson will focus on the different treatment options for managing tonsillitis, which typically depend on the cause and severity.
Tonsillitis I: Introduction01:30

Tonsillitis I: Introduction

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymphoid tissue masses at the back of the throat. This condition can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat.
Etiology
Three primary contributing factors have been identified.
Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...
Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway01:29

Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway

Nasopharyngeal suctioning is a procedure to remove secretions from the upper part of the respiratory tract that the patient cannot clear independently. It helps maintain airway patency and prevents complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation II: ACLS Airway Management

Airway management is a key skill in emergency and critical care settings, as maintaining a clear airway is essential for adequate oxygenation and ventilation.Head Tilt-Chin Lift TechniqueThe head tilt-chin lift maneuver is an essential technique primarily used in patients without suspected cervical spine injuries. To perform this maneuver, one hand is placed on the patient’s forehead, and gentle pressure is applied backward to tilt the head. The fingertips of the other hand are positioned under...
Teeth01:15

Teeth

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...

Summary

Adenotonsillectomy significantly reduced bruxism in children with obstructive sleep symptoms. This surgical intervention improved sleep quality by addressing adenotonsillar hypertrophy and associated bruxism.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pediatric Sleep Medicine
  • Oral Medicine

Background:

  • Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is a common cause of obstructive symptoms in children.
  • Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is a frequently observed condition in pediatric populations.
  • The relationship between obstructive symptoms and bruxism requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of adenotonsillectomy in alleviating bruxism in children.
  • To determine if surgical removal of tonsils and adenoids impacts the prevalence of bruxism.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 140 children aged 4-12 years with obstructive symptoms.
  • Bruxism was assessed using questionnaires before and after adenotonsillectomy.
  • Statistical analysis compared bruxism prevalence pre- and post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of bruxism decreased from 25.7% before surgery to 7.1% after adenotonsillectomy.
  • This reduction in bruxism was statistically significant (p=0.02).
  • No significant gender-based differences in bruxism prevalence were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Adenotonsillectomy is an effective treatment for reducing bruxism in children with obstructive symptoms.
  • Surgical intervention for adenotonsillar hypertrophy can positively impact associated sleep-related behaviors like bruxism.
