Summary
This review highlights the need for validated sleep quality scales in adolescents. A new Spanish scale is proposed to reduce recall bias by minimizing the time between waking and assessment.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Sleep Medicine
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Sleep quality is a subjective construct assessed via self-report scales.
- Validated scales are crucial for reliable assessment in diverse populations.
- Existing scales for children, adolescents, and adults present validation challenges.
Purpose of the Study:
- To critically review validated sleep scales for pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations.
- To identify difficulties and limitations in existing sleep assessment instruments.
- To inform the development of culturally relevant and reliable sleep measures.
Main Methods:
- Bibliographical search conducted from September 2005 to May 2006.
- Databases searched included PubMed, Ovid, and the National Institute of Psychiatry library.
- Keywords: sleep, sleep questionnaire, sleep scale, sleep inventory, adolescent, adolescent sleep scale. Excluded articles without clinimetrical data.
Main Results:
- A critical review of validated sleep scales across age groups was performed.
- Identified limitations and challenges associated with current sleep assessment tools.
- Highlighted the need for specific instruments tailored to different populations.
Conclusions:
- A need exists for a validated Spanish-language sleep quality scale for adolescents.
- The proposed scale should minimize recall bias by reducing the time interval between awakening and assessment.
- This aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of adolescent sleep quality measurement.

Self-Report Tests of Personality
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.
Nursing Evaluation
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.
