Summary

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) is linked to increased oxidative stress in aging males. This study found higher lipid peroxidation markers and lower vitamin antioxidants in BPH patients, suggesting a role for oxidative damage.

Background:

  • Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) is a prevalent condition in aging males.
  • Aging increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to oxidative stress.
  • Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of various age-related diseases, including BPH.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between oxidative stress and Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH).
  • To evaluate plasma levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation, in BPH patients.
  • To assess the status of vitaminic antioxidants, alpha-Tocopherol (Toc) and Ascorbate (Asc), in BPH patients.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 48 BPH patients and 46 age-matched healthy controls.
  • Plasma samples were analyzed for Malondialdehyde (MDA), alpha-Tocopherol (Toc), and Ascorbate (Asc) levels.
  • Statistical analysis was performed to compare biochemical markers between BPH patients and controls.

Main Results:

  • BPH patients exhibited significantly higher plasma MDA levels compared to healthy controls (4.81 vs. 3.69 nmol/ml, p < 0.001).
  • Plasma levels of alpha-Tocopherol (0.85 vs. 1.37 mg/dl) and Ascorbate (0.93 vs. 1.44 mg/dl) were significantly lower in BPH patients.
  • An inverse correlation was observed between plasma MDA and antioxidant levels (alpha-Toc, Asc) in BPH patients.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides evidence of an association between oxidative stress and Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH).
  • Elevated lipid peroxidation and reduced antioxidant status in BPH patients suggest a role for oxidative damage in the disease.
  • Further research is warranted to explore therapeutic strategies targeting oxidative stress in BPH management.
