Microbes and Climate Change01:27

Microbes and Climate Change

Microorganisms are pivotal agents in Earth's biogeochemical cycles, significantly influencing climate dynamics through their metabolic activities. These microbes modulate the levels of key greenhouse gases by both contributing to and helping mitigate climate change.Microbial Contributions to Greenhouse Gas EmissionsRising global temperatures accelerate microbial metabolism, which, in turn, speeds up the decomposition of organic matter. This process releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) through...
What is Climate?01:16

What is Climate?

Climate refers to the prevailing weather conditions in a specific area over an extended period. As the saying goes, “Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get.” Climate is influenced by geographic factors, such as latitude, terrain, and proximity to bodies of water.
Fungal Phylum Basidiomycota01:26

Fungal Phylum Basidiomycota

Basidiomycota is a diverse phylum of fungi that includes ecologically significant decomposers such as white rot fungi, symbionts like mycorrhizal fungi, plant pathogens such as rusts and smuts, and edible species like Agaricus bisporus (the common button mushroom). These fungi play crucial roles in nutrient cycling, symbiotic relationships, and even human health. Their defining feature is the basidium, a microscopic club-shaped structure responsible for producing basidiospores.Fruiting Bodies...
Global Climate Change01:50

Global Climate Change

Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.
Overview of Fungi01:29

Overview of Fungi

Fungi are a diverse group of eukaryotes more closely related to animals than other eukaryotes. Fungal cell walls comprise chitin, a polysaccharide that provides structural strength, and glucans, which contribute to flexibility and integrity. Other polysaccharides, such as mannans and galactosans, may supplement or replace chitin in some fungi. These adaptations, along with their preference for acidic environments and tolerance for high osmotic pressure, enable fungi to thrive in various...
Fungal Group Zygomycota01:29

Fungal Group Zygomycota

Zygomycota, previously classified as a distinct fungal group, are primarily terrestrial, saprophytic molds that play a crucial role as decomposers. Recent phylogenetic studies have revealed that these fungi are now divided into two major clades — Mucoromycota, which includes many symbiotic species, and Zoopagomycota, which primarily consists of parasitic and pathogenic fungi. These groups exhibit distinct ecological roles and reproductive strategies while sharing key structural and...

Summary

Mushroom fruiting seasons are changing. Since 1980, autumnal mushroom fruiting in Norway has been delayed by nearly 13 days on average, impacting different species uniquely due to climate change.

Area of Science:

  • Mycology
  • Phenology
  • Climate Change Biology

Background:

  • Fungal fruiting bodies are crucial for species propagation.
  • The phenology of mushroom fruiting is not well understood.
  • Mushroom picking is a popular activity with economic implications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze shifts in autumnal mushroom fruiting dates in Norway from 1940-2006.
  • To investigate the relationship between climate variables and fruiting phenology.
  • To understand the impact of climate change on fungal life cycles.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of approximately 34,500 dated herbarium records.
  • Statistical analysis of fruiting date changes over time (1940-2006).
  • Correlation analysis with monthly precipitation and temperature data.

Main Results:

  • A significant average delay of 12.9 days in autumnal mushroom fruiting since 1980.
  • Differential delays observed among species, with early fruiters showing stronger delays.
  • Geographic variations in fruiting times, with earlier fruiting in northern/continental Norway.
  • Evidence linking increased autumn/winter temperatures to delayed fruiting.

Conclusions:

  • Recent changes in mushroom phenology align with global climate change.
  • Extended growing seasons due to climate change are likely driving these phenological shifts.
  • Phenological changes are expected to persist under current climate change scenarios.
