Young adolescents can reliably use the Five-Factor Personality Inventory (FFPI) for group research. Individual FFPI assessments require higher cognitive ability, with Autonomy being particularly challenging to measure.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Personality Assessment
- Developmental Psychology
Background:
- The Five-Factor Personality Inventory (FFPI) is a psycholexically-based tool assessing Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Autonomy.
- FFPI scores are established as reliable and valid for adult self-ratings.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the reliability and validity of FFPI self-ratings by young adolescents.
- To determine if cognitive ability influences the accuracy of adolescent FFPI self-ratings.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a large, representative cohort of 13-year-old adolescents.
- Analyzed FFPI factor scores across varying cognitive ability levels within the sample.
Main Results:
- The adult FFPI structure was generally replicated across all cognitive ability levels.
- Adolescent FFPI scores demonstrated sufficient reliability and construct validity for group research.
- Higher cognitive ability is necessary for reliable individual FFPI profile reporting.
Conclusions:
- The FFPI is suitable for group research with young adolescents.
- Individual FFPI assessments require careful consideration of cognitive ability, especially for the Autonomy scale.
