Ketamine gargles effectively reduced the incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat (POST) following tracheal intubation. This intervention offers a promising solution for managing this common complication.
Area of Science:
- Anesthesiology
- Otolaryngology
Background:
- Tracheal intubation frequently causes airway mucosa trauma.
- Postoperative sore throat (POST) affects 21-65% of patients after intubation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of ketamine gargles in preventing POST.
- Comparison of ketamine gargles versus placebo for POST prevention.
Main Methods:
- Prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blind study.
- 46 ASA I-II patients undergoing septorhinoplasty received either saline or ketamine gargle before anesthesia.
- POST was assessed using a four-point scale at 0, 2, 4, and 24 hours post-operation.
Main Results:
- Ketamine gargle group showed lower POST incidence at 0, 2, and 24 hours.
- Significantly fewer patients in the ketamine group experienced severe POST at 4 and 24 hours (P<0.05).
Conclusions:
- Ketamine gargles significantly decrease the occurrence and intensity of POST.
- This method presents a viable strategy for mitigating POST after endotracheal intubation.

Chronic Pharyngitis
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Acute Pharyngitis
Acute pharyngitis is the inflammation of the back of the throat (pharynx), commonly resulting in a sore throat. It is a frequently encountered condition that prompts individuals to seek medical advice.
Classification
Acute pharyngitis can be categorized based on its underlying cause:
