Summary

A cat diagnosed with raccoon pancreatic fluke (Eurytrema procyonis) showed signs of pancreatitis. Treatment with a dewormer resolved the condition, indicating fluke-induced pancreatitis is treatable.

Observation:

  • A domestic shorthair cat presented with normal physical exam findings but positive fecal flotation for Eurytrema procyonis eggs.
  • Abdominal sonography revealed pancreatic changes including enlargement and ductal thickening.
  • Elevated serum pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity (PLI) was noted.

Findings:

  • Diagnostic findings supported fluke-associated pancreatitis.
  • Treatment with praziquantel/pyrantel/febantel led to resolution of sonographic abnormalities.
  • Serum PLI levels normalized post-treatment.

Implications:

  • This case highlights Eurytrema procyonis as a potential cause of pancreatitis in domestic cats.
  • Antiparasitic treatment can effectively manage fluke-induced pancreatitis.
  • Routine fecal examinations are crucial for identifying parasitic causes of gastrointestinal disease.
