Background:

  • Examined research and development (R&D) culture and capacity within a Northern Ireland NHS Trust.
  • Identified strengths, challenges, and opportunities for R&D expansion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a baseline of R&D activity within a large acute Trust.
  • To inform a strategy for developing R&D within the Trust.

Main Methods:

  • A two-stage project was conducted.
  • Included a baseline survey of 379 staff members.
  • Followed by consultations with 11 key stakeholders.

Main Results:

  • Over half of respondents (n=194) had participated in research; 313 read healthcare journals.
  • Staff showed positive attitudes towards research utilization in practice (n=328) and research-informed practice (n=312).
  • Nurse managers expressed support for R&D activities.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides a foundation for developing a positive R&D culture within the Trust.
  • Organizational culture change requires full support from clinicians and management.
