Sentinel node biopsy is a safe and effective breast cancer staging technique. This minimally invasive procedure accurately identifies metastatic nodes, sparing many patients unnecessary axillary dissection and improving staging accuracy.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Nuclear Medicine

Context:

  • Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) offers an alternative to routine axillary dissection for breast cancer staging.
  • This technique identifies patients with positive nodes who may benefit from further treatment, avoiding unnecessary surgery for those with negative nodes.

Purpose:

  • To report a 5-year multidisciplinary experience with sentinel node biopsy.
  • To evaluate the efficacy and impact of SNB on axillary lymph node dissection rates in breast cancer patients.

Summary:

  • A total of 214 SNBs were performed on 209 women between 2000 and 2004.
  • Sentinel node identification rate was 99.1%. Metastases were detected in 62 patients, with micrometastases in 17.
  • Axillary dissections decreased by over 70% within four years, with the sentinel node being the only metastatic site in 80.6% of positive cases.

Impact:

  • Sentinel node biopsy is a validated technique that reduces the number of patients undergoing regional lymph node dissection.
  • It maintains accurate staging and local control for breast cancer patients.
  • This approach spares patients from morbidity associated with unnecessary axillary dissection.
