Endocarditis IV: Nursing Management01:29

Endocarditis IV: Nursing Management

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a chronic infection of the heart's endocardium, primarily affecting the heart valves. A detailed nursing assessment for a patient with IE involves collecting subjective and objective data to ensure an accurate diagnosis and timely intervention.Subjective DataThe nurse gathers information about the patient's symptoms and complaints during the subjective assessment. Patients with infective endocarditis often report non-specific symptoms that can mimic other...

Summary

Reticulated telangiectatic erythema, a skin complication, has been observed following morphine pump implantation. This condition, previously noted after cardiac device implantation, requires further research into its causes.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Reticulated telangiectatic erythema (RTE) is a rare cutaneous complication.
  • It has been previously reported following the implantation of cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators.

Observation:

  • This report details a case of RTE occurring at the site of a morphine pump implantation.
  • The patient was a 56-year-old male with chronic lower back pain.

Findings:

  • The observed erythema was reticulated and pigmented, specifically at the morphine pump implantation site.
  • This presentation mirrors a recently described identical case following morphine pump implantation.

Implications:

  • The physiopathogenesis of RTE after medical device implantation remains poorly understood.
  • This case expands the known association of RTE to include morphine pumps, prompting further investigation into underlying mechanisms.
