    Area of Science:

    • Optoelectronics
    • Optical Data Storage
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • Dual-layer digital versatile disks (DVDs) store data on two transparent substrates, requiring complex optical systems for full data retrieval.
    • Current optical pickup systems often necessitate refocusing or multiple passes to access data from different layers, impacting read speeds.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop an optical pickup capable of simultaneously acquiring data from both layers of a dual-layer DVD.
    • To investigate the use of adaptive optical elements and dielectric gratings for dual-layer data access.

    Main Methods:

    • An adaptive optical element using liquid crystals was employed to generate two axial foci with adjustable spacing.
    • High aspect ratio dielectric gratings were fabricated using electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching to separate polarized light from each layer.
    • The fabricated components were integrated into an optical pickup system for performance evaluation.

    Main Results:

    • The adaptive optical element successfully created two axial foci separated by 55 µm, matching the layer spacing of dual-layer DVDs.
    • The dielectric gratings effectively separated reflected light based on polarization, corresponding to each DVD layer.
    • The assembled pickup system demonstrated the capability for simultaneous dual-layer data acquisition.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed optical pickup design enables simultaneous data retrieval from both layers of a dual-layer DVD.
    • Adaptive optics and precisely fabricated dielectric gratings are key components for efficient dual-layer optical data storage systems.
