Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Transrectal sonography utilizes high-frequency probes for detailed examination of the cervico-urethral unit.
  • This imaging modality is valuable for diagnosing uncommon causes of bladder outlet obstruction.

Observation:

  • A case report details a young patient experiencing complete urinary retention.
  • The obstruction was found to be caused by a bladder cyst.

Findings:

  • High-frequency transrectal sonography is well-tolerated and allows for careful study of the cervico-urethral unit.
  • The technique successfully identified a rare cause of bladder neck obstruction: a bladder cyst.

Implications:

  • Transrectal sonography can diagnose rare bladder outlet obstructions that are otherwise difficult to identify.
