[Small bowel stromal tumors diagnosed by capsule endoscopy]

• Small intestinal stromal tumors (SISTs) constitute 35% of gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

Observation:

• Two patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding underwent capsule endoscopy after negative upper endoscopy and colonoscopy.
• Capsule endoscopy clearly visualized the small bowel in both cases within 8 hours.
• One case revealed a tumor as the bleeding source; the other identified a bleeding site but not the specific lesion.

Findings:

• Capsule endoscopy images suggested a tumor in one patient with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Double-balloon enteroscopy was required in the second case to identify the bleeding lesion.
• Histological and immunohistochemical analyses confirmed spindle cell GISTs (gastrointestinal stromal tumors) of low malignant potential in both cases.

Implications:

• Capsule endoscopy facilitates early diagnosis of small intestinal stromal tumors.
• Prompt diagnosis and therapy initiation via capsule endoscopy can potentially increase patient survival.
• This diagnostic approach is indicated for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding following negative standard endoscopic procedures.
