Background:

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects a significant percentage of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veterans.
High-risk factors including constant vigilance and survival of serious wounds contribute to PTSD development in soldiers.
Need for early, effective, and accessible interventions for military personnel with PTSD.

Observation:

A case report details the treatment of an OIF veteran diagnosed with PTSD.
Virtual reality exposure (VRE) therapy, specifically the "Virtual Iraq" system, was employed for treatment.
The veteran underwent a brief course of VRE therapy.

Findings:

Clinically and statistically significant improvements in PTSD symptoms were observed.
Scores on the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) and PTSD Symptom Scale Self-Report (PSS-SR) decreased.
The veteran showed marked reduction in PTSD symptomatology post-VRE treatment.

Implications:

Virtual reality exposure (VRE) therapy presents a promising intervention for PTSD in military veterans.
This novel approach may offer an acceptable and effective treatment modality for active-duty personnel.
Further research is warranted to validate VRE therapy's efficacy in larger veteran populations.
