Background:

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease.
  • Sleep disturbances are frequently reported in patients with SLE.
  • The prevalence and characteristics of sleep disturbances in SLE require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess sleep disturbances in patients with SLE.
  • To compare sleep quality in SLE patients with a general working population and individuals seeking treatment for insomnia.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 172 individuals with SLE was recruited from lupus support associations.
  • Two comparison groups were used: 223 adults interested in psychological treatment for sleep problems and 456 working adults.
  • The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was administered to all participants to collect data on sleep parameters.

Main Results:

  • SLE patients reported significantly worse sleep quality across most parameters compared to the working sample.
  • SLE patients reported better sleep quality than the treatment-seeking sample, except for sleep onset latency.
  • 80.5% of SLE patients scored above the threshold for poor sleep quality on the PSQI global score.

Conclusions:

  • Sleep disturbance is a common issue in individuals with SLE.
  • Sleep problems in SLE patients warrant greater clinical attention and research.
  • Further studies with more representative samples are needed to fully understand sleep disturbances in SLE.
