Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Pulmonology
  • Gynecologic Pathology

Background:

  • Pulmonary endometriosis is an exceptionally rare condition with limited documented treatment strategies.
  • Endometriosis involves the growth of uterine lining tissue outside the uterus, which can affect the lungs.

Observation:

  • A young female patient presented with hemoptysis (coughing up blood) that coincided with her menstrual cycle.
  • Pelvic endometriosis was histologically confirmed, leading to the inference of pulmonary endometriosis.

Findings:

  • Treatment with Danazol, a synthetic androgen, resulted in the cessation of both menstruation and hemoptysis.
  • This symptomatic relief strongly supported the clinical diagnosis of pulmonary endometriosis.

Implications:

  • This case highlights Danazol as a potential therapeutic option for managing pulmonary endometriosis.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the pathophysiology and optimize treatment protocols for this rare condition.
