Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the short-term and long-term results of laparoscopic adrenalectomies.
  • To analyze the safety and efficacy of the procedure in a tertiary care center.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 67 laparoscopic adrenalectomies performed between 1995 and 2005.
  • Utilized transperitoneal lateral (97.0%) and retroperitoneal (3.0%) approaches.
  • Clinical characteristics and outcomes were analyzed.

  • Common indications included pheochromocytoma (41.8%) and aldosterone-producing adenoma (22.4%).
  • Mean operative time was 149.0 minutes, with mean blood loss of 126 mL.
  • Conversion to open surgery occurred in 7.5% of cases, with one reoperation for hemorrhage.

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a safe procedure for select adrenal tumors.
  • It is a reasonable option for large adrenal tumors if complete resection is feasible and no local invasion is present.
