Summary

Hydatid cyst of the spleen, a rare condition, was successfully treated with laparoscopic splenectomy in a 44-year-old male. This minimally invasive approach offers a viable surgical option for selected cases, with no recurrence observed post-surgery.

Background:

Hydatid cyst of the spleen is an uncommon presentation, even in regions where echinococcosis is endemic.
Surgical management has advanced from traditional splenectomy to minimally invasive methods.

Observation:

A 44-year-old male presented with an asymptomatic, palpable mass in the left hypochondrium.
Imaging revealed a large, 12.5 cm unilocular splenic cyst with a thin, regular wall.

Findings:

Laparoscopic total splenectomy was performed, involving careful dissection and management of splenic vessels.
The spleen was partially evacuated, and the cyst extracted via mini-laparotomy.
The procedure was completed in 200 minutes with an uneventful postoperative course.
