Summary

This study found that the Converser computer program, utilizing speech recognition, significantly improved communication speed by predicting utterances and storing noun phrases for users. Program users benefited from faster interaction rates and effective use of stored phrases.

Background:

Evaluating novel computer-assisted communication tools is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the effectiveness of the Converser computer program in improving communication.
To determine if Converser enhances communication rate and user interaction.
To analyze the utilization of stored noun phrases by program users.

Main Methods:

Two conditions were compared: an alphabet-only aid and an aid with the Converser program.
Dyads (user and speaking partner) performed conversation and interview tasks.
