Background:

  • Root canal treatment failures are often linked to persistent microorganisms.
  • Standard cleaning and disinfection methods may not eradicate bacteria in complex root canal anatomy.
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers a potential adjunctive strategy for bacterial elimination.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) against endodontic pathogens.
  • To quantify the reduction of Enterococcus faecalis colonies in contaminated root canals.

Main Methods:

  • Extracted human teeth were contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis and incubated.
  • Teeth were divided into a control group and a test group receiving toluidine blue and laser irradiation.
  • Bacterial colony-forming units (CFU) were counted before and after treatment.

Main Results:

  • The test group showed a 99.9% decrease in CFU.
  • The control group exhibited a 2.6% increase in CFU.
  • PDT significantly reduced bacterial load in root canals.

Conclusions:

  • Photodynamic therapy demonstrated significant bactericidal effects against Enterococcus faecalis.
  • PDT is a viable adjunctive treatment for disinfecting root canals contaminated with endodontic pathogens.
