Ischemic Stroke l: Introduction01:15

Ischemic Stroke l: Introduction

Ischemic stroke is an acute cerebrovascular condition in which blood flow to a brain region is suddenly interrupted, leading to tissue infarction. Neurons depend on continuous oxygen and glucose supply, so even brief reductions in perfusion cause energy failure, ionic imbalance, and irreversible injury. Ischemic strokes are classified into thrombotic and embolic types based on their underlying mechanisms.Thrombotic MechanismsThrombotic stroke develops when a clot forms within a cerebral artery.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Sexual Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Stroke's impact on physical function is well-documented, but its effect on sexual health and quality of life remains understudied.
  • This study investigates sexual functioning and satisfaction in Turkish stroke survivors with mild to no disability.

Observation:

  • 103 Turkish stroke patients with mild or no disability were assessed for sexual functioning, clinical status, and socio-demographic factors.
  • Neurologic status and disability were evaluated using NIH stroke, Glasgow coma, Barthel, and Rankin scales.

Findings:

  • A significant decline in sexual activity frequency, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction was observed post-stroke.
  • Stroke affected male erection/ejaculation and female lubrication/orgasm, with significant gender differences in coital frequency.
  • Fear of recurrent stroke did not differ between genders.

Implications:

  • Stroke survivors have unmet sexual health needs that require attention during rehabilitation.
  • Cultural factors and biases may influence post-stroke sexual health outcomes.
  • Further research is needed to develop culturally sensitive interventions for sexual dysfunction after stroke.
