Background:

  • The inferior alveolar nerve (V3), a branch of the trigeminal nerve, is crucial in dental procedures.
  • Accurate imaging of this nerve is essential for diagnosing malignant tumors invading the jaw bone.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) for visualizing the inferior alveolar nerve within the mandible.
  • To establish an initial experimental application of DTT for this specific anatomical region.

Main Methods:

  • 10 healthy volunteers underwent 1.5-T Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging.
  • Diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) sequences were acquired.
  • Image registration and fiber tracking were performed using specialized software on an off-line workstation.

Main Results:

  • Low signal-to-noise ratio in DTT of oral structures presented challenges in precise region of interest placement.
  • Overlaying T1-weighted images improved the accuracy of region of interest selection.
  • The inferior alveolar nerve was successfully visualized within the mandible in all participants.

Conclusions:

  • Diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) effectively visualized the inferior alveolar nerve using automatic fiber tracking in healthy subjects.
