Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against specific...

Summary

Prostatic leiomyosarcoma is a rare cancer. Initial treatment with surgery and radiotherapy may improve outcomes for patients with this rare tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) surgery can be followed by rare complications.
  • Recurrent bladder outflow obstruction may indicate underlying malignancy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a case of prostatic leiomyosarcoma.
  • To discuss optimal initial management strategies for this rare tumor.

Main Methods:

  • A case presentation of a 65-year-old man with recurrent bladder outflow obstruction post-BPH surgery.
  • Diagnostic cystoscopy and histological examination.
  • Follow-up after surgical resection, radiotherapy, and management of metastatic disease.

Main Results:

  • Histology confirmed prostatic leiomyosarcoma.

  • The patient developed distant metastases (lungs, brain) despite local treatment.
  • No evidence of local recurrence was found.
  • Conclusions:

    • Prostatic leiomyosarcoma is an aggressive malignancy requiring prompt diagnosis.
    • Combined modality therapy, including conservative surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy, is recommended as initial treatment.
    • Long-term surveillance is crucial due to the risk of distant metastases.
