Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the hypothesis that high-iron infant formula is associated with infant salmonellosis.
  • To investigate the role of feeding practices in infant salmonellosis.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted.
  • Data collected on feeding practices, medical, and socioeconomic factors for 78 Salmonella-case infants and 167 controls.

Main Results:

  • Infants fed high-iron formula (≥10 mg/L) were more likely to be cases (OR=2.96).
  • Breast-fed infants were less likely to be cases (OR=9.15).

Conclusions:

  • Breast-feeding appears protective against clinical salmonellosis in infants.
  • High-iron infant formula consumption is associated with an increased risk of infant salmonellosis.
