Dual-arch and custom tray impression accuracy.

Summary

This study found that dual-arch impression trays are as accurate as custom acrylic resin trays for dental casts. Both tray types provide reliable accuracy in all measured dimensions for dental impressions.

Background:

Accurate dental impressions are crucial for fabricating well-fitting prostheses.
Various impression tray designs, including custom and dual-arch trays, are used in clinical practice.
Understanding the dimensional accuracy of different impression trays is essential for predictable clinical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the three-dimensional accuracy of dental casts made using custom acrylic resin trays versus two types of dual-arch impression trays.
To evaluate the dimensional stability of addition silicone impression material when used with different tray systems.

Main Methods:

Thirty complete-arch impressions were made from a typodont using addition silicone material with custom trays or dual-arch trays (10/group).
Reference marks on the typodont facilitated measurements in mesiodistal, buccolingual, and occlusogingival dimensions.
Gypsum casts were fabricated, and distances between reference marks were measured using a measuring microscope and compared to the typodont.

Main Results:

The dimensional accuracy of casts produced by dual-arch trays was comparable to those made with custom acrylic resin trays across all measured dimensions.
No statistically significant differences in accuracy were found between the custom tray and the two dual-arch tray types.
The percent deviation from the original typodont measurements was similar for all tested tray systems.

Conclusions:

Dual-arch impression trays offer a level of accuracy equivalent to custom acrylic resin trays for complete-arch impressions.
The choice between dual-arch and custom trays does not appear to compromise the dimensional accuracy of the resulting dental casts.
These findings support the clinical utility of dual-arch trays as a viable alternative to custom trays in restorative dentistry.
