Translation is the process of synthesizing proteins from the genetic information carried by messenger RNA (mRNA). Following transcription, it constitutes the final step in the expression of genes. This process is carried out by ribosomes, complexes of protein and specialized RNA molecules. Summary

This study found no link between the Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (-308G/A) gene polymorphism and toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis (TR). The TNF-alpha polymorphism does not appear to influence the occurrence or recurrence of this ocular condition.

Background:

  • Toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis (TR) is an ocular inflammation caused by *Toxoplasma gondii*.
  • Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is a key cytokine in inflammatory responses.
  • Genetic variations, such as TNF-alpha polymorphisms, may influence disease susceptibility and severity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the TNF-alpha (-308G/A) gene polymorphism and the occurrence of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis (TR).
  • To determine if this specific TNF-alpha polymorphism is linked to recurrent episodes of TR.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 100 Brazilian patients with TR and 100 controls with positive toxoplasmosis serology but no uveitis.
  • Genomic DNA was extracted from oral swabs and analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction endonuclease digestion to determine TNF-alpha genotypes.
  • Statistical analysis, including chi-squared tests, was used to compare genotype and allele frequencies between groups.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were observed in genotype, allele, or allele carriage frequencies of the TNF-alpha (-308G/A) polymorphism between TR patients and control subjects.
  • Frequencies of the TNF-alpha genotype and allele did not differ significantly between TR patients with and without recurrent episodes.

  • This is the first study to examine the association between TNF-alpha (-308G/A) polymorphism and TR in humans.
  • The findings suggest that the TNF-alpha gene polymorphism (-308G/A) is not associated with the occurrence or recurrence of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis.
