Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Context:

Language and communication disorders are key diagnostic criteria for pervasive developmental disorders (PDD).
Simple identification procedures are crucial for health and education professionals to guide individuals toward specialized services.
The Autistic Behavior Checklist (ABC) is a widely used tool for PDD assessment due to its ease of application and reliable results.

Purpose:

To investigate if the relationship between a patient's communicative profile and their Autistic Behavior Checklist (ABC) score aids in diagnosing autism spectrum disorders.
To explore the diagnostic utility of correlating communicative abilities with ABC scores in children and adolescents.

Summary:

This study analyzed 117 children and adolescents (ages 2-16) undergoing language therapy.
Results revealed statistically significant negative correlations between ABC scores and measures of communicative interaction and complexity.
A weak correlation between the ABC's language subscale and other data suggests a divergence from DSM-IV and ICD-10 autism diagnostic criteria.

Impact:

Findings indicate that the ABC may not fully align with established diagnostic frameworks for autism spectrum disorder.
The study underscores the ongoing challenge of establishing objective criteria for differentiating subgroups within the autism spectrum.
This research contributes to a better understanding of the limitations of the ABC in capturing the full spectrum of autistic disorder characteristics.
