Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Health
  • Nutritional Epidemiology

Background:

  • Elevated serum cholesterol is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
  • Coffee consumption is widespread globally, with varying preparation methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between coffee consumption and serum cholesterol levels.
  • To analyze this relationship in a large cohort of Italian managers and employees.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of covariance was employed to compare serum cholesterol levels.
  • Data from 8,983 subjects (1986-1989) were analyzed, adjusting for age, BMI, alcohol, smoking, and physical activity.

Main Results:

  • A positive correlation was observed between coffee intake and serum cholesterol, especially in men.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Higher consumption (4-5 cups/day and >5 cups/day) showed statistically significant increases in cholesterol levels after adjustments.
  • The association remained consistent across smokers and non-smokers.
  • Conclusions:

    • Coffee consumption is linked to increased serum cholesterol levels.
    • The Italian coffee preparation method (mocha) may contribute to this hypercholesterolemic effect.
    • Further research into coffee's impact on cardiovascular biomarkers is warranted.
