Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Costal fringe, a pattern of venous telangiectases, is rarely found in healthy young adults. This study found it in only 0.2% of young Air Force personnel, suggesting it is not a common finding in this demographic.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Costal fringe is a bandlike pattern of venous telangiectases on the anterolateral costal margins.
  • It is commonly observed in elderly men, but its association with underlying disease is not well-established.

Observation:

  • The study examined 1523 active duty Air Force personnel (1203 men, 320 women) aged 17-34.
  • All subjects were screened for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seronegativity and had no known hyperestrogenic or other disease states.

Findings:

  • Costal fringe was identified in only three individuals, all of whom were men.
  • The prevalence of costal fringe in this healthy young adult population was 0.2%.

Implications:

  • Costal fringe is a rare finding in healthy young adults.
  • Its low prevalence in this demographic suggests it may not be a significant indicator of underlying pathology in younger individuals.
