Summary

The Nagata technique for microtia reconstruction using costal cartilage showed significant changes in framework dimensions. Auricular height decreased by 3.1% and width increased by 4.0% post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • The Brent technique utilizes a known growth-of-cartilage framework for microtia reconstruction.
  • The Nagata technique is a 2-stage approach for microtia reconstruction using costal cartilage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the behavior and dimensional changes of costal cartilage frameworks used in microtia reconstruction via the Nagata technique.
  • To compare framework dimensions at implantation and final follow-up.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 28 patients who underwent costal cartilage auricular reconstruction between 1998 and 2005.
  • Measurements of auricular framework height and width were taken at implantation (template size) and final follow-up.
  • Patient age at reconstruction and follow-up duration were recorded.

Main Results:

  • A significant decrease in auricular framework height (3.1%) and a significant increase in width (4.0%) were observed.
  • These dimensional changes were not influenced by the duration of follow-up.
  • Reconstruction was performed on patients aged 9-10 years, when the auricle is near final size.

Conclusions:

  • The Nagata technique results in predictable dimensional changes in costal cartilage auricular frameworks.
  • Given the observed changes and the age of reconstruction, a policy change regarding the Nagata technique is not deemed necessary based on this study.
  • Further research may explore long-term stability and patient-reported outcomes.
