Aromatic Compounds: Overview01:25

Aromatic Compounds: Overview

In general, the term ‘aromatic’ indicates a pleasant smell or fragrance from fresh flowers, freshly prepared coffee, etc. In the early history of organic chemistry, many benzene derivatives were isolated from the pleasant odor oils of the plants. For example, vanillin was isolated from the oil of vanilla, methyl salicylate from the oil of wintergreen, and cinnamaldehyde from the oil of cinnamon. They all had a pleasant odor; hence the name aromatic was given.
In 1825, Faraday isolated benzene...

Area of Science:

  • Natural Products Chemistry
  • Phytochemistry

Background:

  • Curcuma comosa is a plant species native to Thailand.
  • Sesquiterpenes are a class of terpenes derived from three isoprene units.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and identify known sesquiterpenes from Curcuma comosa rhizomes.
  • To investigate the optical activity of the isolated compounds.

Main Methods:

  • Extraction and isolation of compounds from dried Curcuma comosa rhizomes.
  • Structure elucidation using physicochemical evidence.
  • Optical activity measurements.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-six known sesquiterpenes were successfully isolated.
  • Glechomanolide, curzerenone, curcolonol, alismol, alismoxide, and zedoarondiol exhibited no significant optical activity.
  • The lack of optical activity in certain compounds may indicate artifact formation.

Conclusions:

  • The study identified a diverse range of sesquiterpenes from Curcuma comosa.
  • The findings highlight the importance of considering potential artifacts in natural product isolation.
