  • Motorcycle accidents peaked in 2003, followed by a gradual decrease, but casualties showed a consistent increase, reaching 26,200 deaths and 157,500 injuries in 2005.
  • While mortality per 10,000 motorcycles and the death-to-injury ratio were lower than for automobiles, mortality per 100 motorcycle accidents was significantly higher (P<0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Despite improvements in overall traffic safety management, annual casualties from motorcycle accidents continue to rise.
  • Urgent measures are needed to strengthen motorcycle management, enhance motorcyclist education, implement effective traffic policies, and improve emergency medical services for injured riders.
