Cerebral blood flow changes in patients with probable medication-overuse headache

Ergotamine overuse headache (PEOH) significantly increases blood flow velocity (BFV) in the basilar artery and middle cerebral artery. Analgesic overuse headache (PAOH) may reduce BFV, suggesting different mechanisms in medication-overuse headaches.

- The findings suggest that ergotamine overuse leads to increased BFV, likely via vasoconstriction, particularly affecting the BA and MCA.
- These results imply that 5HT1B/1D receptors may play a significant role in the BA and MCA in the context of ergotamine-induced vasoconstriction.
- Analgesic overuse may result in a functional disorder of neurovascular reflexes, potentially causing reduced intracerebral vessel tone and vasodilatation.
