Appendiceal intussusception, a rare pediatric condition, may require partial cecectomy with appendectomy for effective treatment. This approach addresses recurrence after simple appendectomy in children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric surgery
- Gastrointestinal surgery
Background:
- Appendiceal intussusception is an uncommon condition in children.
- The ideal surgical approach for appendiceal intussusception remains undetermined.
Observation:
- A child with appendiceal intussusception underwent a simple appendectomy.
- The patient experienced recurrent intussusception at the cecal base near the appendiceal stump.
Findings:
- Recurrent intussusception was successfully treated by resecting a portion of the cecum around the appendiceal staple line.
- Partial cecectomy combined with appendectomy appears to be a highly effective surgical strategy.
Implications:
- This case suggests that partial cecectomy with appendectomy may be the optimal surgical management for appendiceal intussusception.
- Further studies are warranted to confirm the efficacy of this surgical approach in pediatric patients.
