Psychological stress significantly influences temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms, including pain and joint issues. This study highlights the importance of stress management in TMD etiology and treatment.
Area of Science:
- Dental Research
- Psychosomatic Medicine
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a complex condition with multifactorial causes.
- Understanding the interplay between psychological factors and TMD symptoms is crucial for effective management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between key temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms and psychological stress.
- To evaluate the role of parafunctional activities in the context of stress and TMD.
Main Methods:
- A questionnaire survey was administered to 3,225 corporate employees.
- The survey assessed TMD symptoms (trismus, joint noise, pain) and parafunctions (daytime clenching, nocturnal bruxism) in relation to stress levels.
- Chi-square tests were used to analyze the correlations between TMD symptoms/parafunctions and stress.
Main Results:
- Significant correlations were found between stress and all assessed TMD symptoms (p = 0.001 for trismus; p < 0.001 for joint noise, pain, clenching, and bruxism).
- These findings indicate a strong association between psychological stress and the manifestation of TMD.
Conclusions:
- Psychological factors, particularly stress, play a significant role in the etiology, progression, and treatment of TMD.
- Further well-controlled studies are warranted to elucidate the complex mechanisms underlying TMD and stress.
