Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Medical device history

Background:

  • The Agility Ankle System, patented in the late 1970s, is a widely used ankle prosthesis manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics.
  • It is the most utilized ankle prosthesis in the United States.
  • The Agility Ankle System boasts over 20 years of follow-up data, the longest for any fixed-bearing device.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the historical development of the Agility Total Ankle System.
  • To illustrate the design modifications, specifically focusing on the LP implant.

Main Methods:

  • Historical review of the Agility Ankle System.
  • Illustration of design modifications with the LP implant.

Main Results:

  • The Agility Ankle System has a long history dating back to the late 1970s.
  • Multiple design modifications have been implemented since its inception.
  • The LP implant represents a specific iteration of these modifications.

Conclusions:

  • The Agility Ankle System has evolved significantly since its original design.
  • Understanding these modifications is crucial for appreciating the device's long-term performance and clinical use.
