Summary

Background:

Queensland Rail commissioned a study due to observed increases in train suicides.
Understanding the characteristics of victims and attempters is crucial for prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the incidence and trends of suicide within the Queensland train system.
To describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of train suicide victims and attempters.

Main Methods:

Utilized data from the Queensland Suicide Register (QSR) and Queensland Rail Incident Surveillance Information System (ISIS) from 1990-2004 for suicides.
Analyzed attempted suicide data from ISIS for 1993-2006.

Main Results:

Identified 161 train suicide victims, constituting 2% of all Queensland suicides.
No significant trend changes in train suicides were observed; however, 36.6% of victims were aged 15-24.
Nearly 50% of young victims (15-24) had positive blood alcohol content, and 40.4% had a documented psychiatric diagnosis.

Conclusions:

Train suicides in Queensland showed a stable trend between 1990-2004.
Young individuals (15-24) are disproportionately affected by train suicides, with high rates of alcohol consumption.
This study represents the largest Australian dataset on train suicides to date.
