Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics
  • Dental Materials Science

Background:

  • Skeletal Class III malocclusion requires effective orthodontic treatment.
  • Removable reverse headgear appliances are used, but retention can be an issue.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of modified retention elements in reverse headgear appliances.
  • To improve treatment outcomes for skeletal Class III malocclusion.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion were divided into two groups: traditional (T) and modified (M) retention elements.
  • The modified appliance included an Adams clasp on the central incisors.
  • Minimum dislocating force and dislocation occurrence were measured over three months.

Main Results:

  • The modified (M) group demonstrated significantly superior retention compared to the traditional (T) group.
  • Minimum dislocating force was notably higher in the M group (P<0.01, P<0.001).
  • Dislocations occurred less frequently in the M group (2 vs. 9 times, P<0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Incorporating an Adams clasp effectively prevents downward appliance dislocation during traction.
  • This modification substantially enhances the therapeutic efficacy of reverse headgear appliances.
