Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology

Context:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is increasingly utilized for adrenal gland pathologies.
  • Surgical experience and learning curves are critical for optimizing outcomes in minimally invasive procedures.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the surgical experience with transperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
  • To compare outcomes with published series and analyze the learning curve.
  • To assess the feasibility, safety, and reproducibility of the technique.

Summary:

  • 87 adrenalectomies were performed (70 laparoscopic).
  • Outcomes were compared between early (first 40) and late (last 30) procedures.
  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy demonstrated a significant reduction in operative time and hospital stay with increasing experience.

Impact:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a feasible and safe procedure for urological surgeons with prior laparoscopic experience.
  • The study confirms the efficacy, safety, and reproducibility of transperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
  • Findings contribute to understanding the learning curve and optimizing outcomes for this minimally invasive approach.
