[Recommendations for treatment of neuropathic pain]

Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inibitors (SSNRIs), calcium channel alpha2-delta ligands and topical lidocaine are recommended as a first-line treatment for patients with neuropathic pain. In patients who have failed to respond to these first-line medications alone or in combination, opioid analgetics or tramadol can be used as a second-line treatment alone or in combination with one of the first-line medications. In some specific situations, opioid analgetics or tramadol can also be considered for first-line use.
